Should InnKeepers go on Diets?

OK- let’s talk honestly about retirement- which we just did after 17 years of inn keeping! Byron and I are having a blast in North Carolina renovating our home and meeting really sweet retired neighbors. Funny how we chose a neighborhood that is mostly retired, relaxed and really friendly folks. Even during the epidemic we have had several neighbors deliver food, flowers, really sweet cards and several invited us on their porch for cocktail hour. We are so thankful as the only person we knew was our delightful real estate agent, Dallas Ducote. (anyone thinking about moving here, we would highly recommend him)

Now that we are retired I was thrilled to have time to make healthy meals and to try new recipes. We also have been walking 4-5 miles each day. I thought great- this is the perfect opportunity to take off the 10 pounds that somehow landed up on my body. Over the years my weight has gone up and down by 10 pounds but I was always able to take it off. After the kids left in July I decided to get really serious and to watch what we ate. After one month of starving myself I did not loose one pound! Yikes, what is going on. Is this what happens when you retire? Byron said, “oh you are building muscles” That did not make me feel better as my jeans were still tight.

Fast forward to last week when I read an article that Johana Gaines has lost 20 pounds by using a Keto diet. What??? What is Keto? Never heard of it but since I have admired everything Johana has done I started researching Ketogenic Diets. Much to learn, really interesting and it made sense to me that I had been eating healthy and watching calories but my body was burning carbs instead of fat. We love Sweet Potato fries and make them often- yikes- they always were good choices in the past but I know my body is changing and it is time to try something new.

Will let you know how things go as this is a commitment to good health and a whole new way of looking at fat. I have been trained to always grocery shop for non-fat items but now full fat is recommended with no sugar and reduced carbs.

I have started taking Keto Supplements and am learning new recipes. Have found the Cookbook by Jen Fisch really helpful. Also drinking BulletProof Coffee- WHAT? Never knew what that was either but I must say having one cup in the morning (it tastes exactly the same as my regular coffee) is helping me to extend my night time fast until after our walk which has been great as I do not like to exercise on a full stomach.

I’ve lost 4 pounds in three days and honestly haven’t felt hungry, have plenty of energy and no cravings. I know most of the 4 pounds is water weight and I am more focused now on how my body feels and if my jeans are loose:)

Would love to hear any comments from our readers who have experienced this lifestyle diet.

I am trying new recipes daily and Byron was especially pleased with the Cauliflower Summer Salad that I made last night. It was really quite easy to make, tasted like potato salad and filled us up. Interesting to learn that we should all eat more Cauliflower- it’s filled with great nutrients and is not as susceptible to pesticides.

I am not one for fads but so far I am liking everything I read and experience on this Keto Diet- time will tell but in the meantime I am committed for the long haul.

I’ve learned that my body doesn’t like carbs. So yes I am also working the keto program. But I’m also committed to intermittent fasting. My first meal is typically about 10am and I have no additional food after 6pm. Keep the recipes coming. They’re Great.

Thanks Dorothy- it is actually much easier to follow then I originally thought. Love to you both. Thought of you when we saw 2 grey hounds on our morning walk this morning.

Good for you! I have done the Keto diet and shed some pounds! I now eat some carbs (bread, pasta) in small portions and my weight has remained constant at the 10 lb. drop number. I eat a lot of veggies, fish and eggs but limit my red meats to once a week (my personal choice not a Keto rule). Stick with this diet and you will see results! A side note…if you find you are really craving pasta…..don’t deny yourself because your body is telling you it needs some carbs but remember “a little goes a long way”. Good luck! ☺️
